Today I am going to show you what niche marketing is and how you can develop your own niche market from doing what you love to do. Turing you passion and hobbies into a niche or niches and how you can make you niche marketing your secret weapon.
So that you will fully understand what niche marketing is I will show you a few niche marketing definitions.
Niche Marketing Definitions
“Specific and highly focused group of people who are looking for a solution to a problem or an answer to a question online”
“A niche market is the subset of the market on which a specific product is focused. The market niche defines the product features aimed at satisfying specific market needs, as well as the price range, production quality and the demographics that it is intended to target. It is also a small market segment” (Wikipedia).
“Niche marketing is defined as channelling all marketing efforts towards one well-defined segment of the population. There is one important thing to understand that ‘niche’ does not exist, but is created by smart marketing techniques and identifying what the customer wants“ (The Economic Times)
Concentrating all marketing efforts on a small but specific and well defined segment of the population. Niches do not exist but are created by identifying needs, wants, and requirements that are being addressed poorly or not at all by other firms, and developing and delivering goods or services to satisfy them. As a strategy, niche marketing is aimed at being at big fish in a small pond instead of being a small fish in a big pond. Also call micromarketing. (Business Dictionary)
In other words we are looking for people that have a common problem that they want to find a solution to and or and an answer to their question or questions. This is where we come in.
How to Make Niche Marketing Your Secret Weapon
We want to be able to be in a position to be able to help them find the answers they are looking for and or fix their problem.
Because we do not want to be offering a solution that is not needed by our niche market, for example we don’t want to offer ice to an Eskimo.
No but seriously we want to focus on our niche market and find people that have problems that they need help in fixing.
We also do not want to make our niche market too broad, by this I mean if your niche is on say hair falling out in three years because no one would really be looking for that, instead they may be looking for how to prevent hair falling out or how to grow your hair back. This will be more specific and we can help fixing this.
It is really important you learn about being specific with your niche. Many people think topics like weight loss is a specific niche but it isn’t. It is a niche not specific enough to really get a good target audience.
Weight loss is more of a general niche, so you will have to make it more specific, and this can be done like these examples.
- Weight loss for people with diabetes
- Weight loss for new mothers
- Weight loss for people with thyroid issues
Many people go wrong by making their niche marketing far too broad and by doing this making it harder to become successful in that niche.
The main aim with a successful niche market is to create a niche that focuses on a smaller group of people.

By making your niche specific you will find it a lot easier to find people who will have an interest in that topic.
It will make it a lot easier to get people to visit your website
It will make it easier to sell products to them
By having a specific niche it is easier to write content directly to them and their problem. This means that you will be aiming your niche to a highly targeted audience that are interested in what you have to offer.
There is a quote that comes to mind
“It is much better to be a big fish in a little pond than a little fish in a big pond”
You get the picture.
It is important to have a business that you enjoy working on because you will be spending a lot of time with it in the beginning building it.
It is also important to have a game plan for your new business and the really good thing is that you can use it as a template and or check list for building your other websites.
I find this really helpful in building my income stream, because once you have built your first website then the others are much easier and quicker.
Identifying Your Passion and Hobbies
It is always best to start with your passion and or hobbies. I strongly suggest that you start with something that you love and are passionate about.
To be honest your first business is going to be you’re hardest, because you are learning as you go and this is why it is a really good idea to use a platform that will help you get through this painlessly.
By building you first niche marketing of a subject that you are passionate about it will be more enjoyable getting started and you are much more likely to succeed.
You will be writing content on a topic that you know and like and because of this you have most of the work that you need done.
Here is an example of niche marketing on something you love.
I know some people that love video games and many of them have based their niche on one video game and are doing very well at it. They are helping other gamers learn how to play and win.
They have combined their passion with their hobby and now have profitable businesses doing what they love.
You too can combine your hobby with your passion with your first venture.
You can make some serious money doing what you love to do. If you take this seriously, you can be making money from doing what you love and this can be more like a hobby than a business.
With That in Mind
Think about what really gets you excited?
What Subject would you like your business to be based on?
You need to be excited every day from when you wake up in the morning and get on your laptop / computer.
If you can’t get excited about your business then you may as well carry on helping to build someone else’s by going back to the 9 to 5. Because you will soon get bored.
Oh and you do not have to be an expert in your chosen field so do not worry about that.
What You Need to Do?
Write down all the things that you are passionate about.
Write down all you hobbies.
Please be specific, if you like table tennis then write table tennis not sports, if your like fishing then put down they type of fishing you like.
Many people have failed because they have been too broad and not specific with their niche. It is important to be specific about your niche.
Ask Yourself These Questions
What are you interested in?
What are you passionate about?
What subjects do you have a lot of knowledge about?
What subjects can you answer questions on easily?
What do people ask you, your advice on?
You may think that you do not have any specialist knowledge, but I would say to you that you do. In fact you have knowledge and skills thank you can turn into a profitable home based business.
You are an entrepreneur, just tell yourself that.
Think about your life experiences
Write down all the jobs that you have done.
You will have transferable skills that you may not have thought of.
Write down all the subjects that you are interested in.
Are there any sports that you would like to play and or like to know more about?
What sports have you played?
What Websites do you visit?
What forums and or news groups are you involved with?
What books do you have on your bookshelf?
Do you have specialist’s education, have you taken classes? Such as pottery, crafts, knitting, ceramics, painting, decorating, DIY for example.
Do you like making things? What things do you like making?
Do you collect anything? What do you collect?
Do you go to the cinema? What Films do you go to watch at the cinema?
What Television shows do you enjoy watching? Are they in a specialist market?
What magazines/comics do you enjoy reading?
Do you go to craft fairs and exhibitions?
Start to become more observant of your environment. I notice so many things around me every day that I could possibly turn into a new income stream.
These are just to get you thinking of all the possibilities that are available to you right now.
Alternatively You Could
You could also create a business around a niche that you want to know more about, that you want to learn more about. This could be something that you have always wanted to learn or do.
Once You Have Your List
Now that you have your list it is now time for you to start doing some research.
This is not hard to do and can be fun bring your ideas to life.
